Intersex fashion model: Stop 'unnecessary' surgeries on children

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Top fashion model, Hanne Gaby Odiele has revealed she is intersex in the hope of opening up a dialogue about the condition and stopping “unconsented and unnecessary and irreversible surgeries” on intersex people while they are children. Intersex people are born with a mixture of male and female sex characteristics. According to the United Nations, the condition affects up to 1.7% of the world's population. Hanne was born with undescended testes which she had removed at the age of 10 after doctors warned they could cause cancer. Speaking to 5 live’s Phil Williams she said “too often [doctors] use the scare of cancer as a way of operating.” “But I feel too often [surgeries are] done out of fear for non-binary bodies and they’re more harmful and traumatising than can be good.” This clip is originally from the Phil Williams programme on Tuesday 24 January 2017.
