How elderly patients in Yeovil avoid A&E

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

More than three quarters of elderly patients referred to a specialised service from A&E go home on the same day. Yeovil Hospital Trust鈥檚 Frail Older Persons Assessment Service reduces pressure on A&E by assessing patients in a separate unit. Paul Mears, Chief Executive of Yeovil Hospital Trust, told 5 live: 鈥淥ur aim is to make sure that our frail older people that come into hospital are given a comprehensive assessment but away from the busy Emergency Department.鈥 The assessment unit is led by a team that includes a doctor, pharmacist and physiotherapist. Mr Mears added: 鈥淎bout 75-80 per cent of people who go through actually go home the same day and they don鈥檛 actually come into a hospital bed.鈥 This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on Thursday 9 February 2017.
