The chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Damian Collins, spoke to 5 live after their report discovered that football clubs, in particular, were not doing enough to tackle instances of homophobic abuse. Damian explained: ‘One of the challenges that football has is that there are no out gay players playing professional football in this country, and that’s unusual compared with other sports’ He continued: ‘I think this is not only about managing the stadium environment, it’s about clubs looking at the culture within their club themselves, also, looking at the role that can be played by straight athletes supporting gay athletes too.’ He concluded by saying: ‘We expect the stewards to take action against racist abuse, so it’s really no different, it’s applying the same sort of policy we would apply towards racist abuse, to homophobic abuse as well.
