The Blue Danube waltz at 150

Radio 4 in Four

Available for over a year

150 years ago one of the world’s most famous pieces of music The Blue Danube waltz was performed for the first time at a concert in Vienna. Originally Johann Strauss the Younger’s piece was performed as a choral work, but it’s the orchestral version that has become so popular. For Austrians it’s now the country's unofficial national anthem, with some politicians also using it for their own ends, as Bethany Bell explains. First broadcast on From Our Own Correspondent, 16 February 2017.
