Should use-by dates be scrapped to prevent wastage?

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Food Waste charity Wrap wants to scrap the use-by date label on the side of products and encourages using the 鈥榮niff test鈥 instead. It says the labels are used on products that don鈥檛 need them and that more than 100 million pints of milk are wasted each year in the UK. However, Dr Amanda Squire, spokesperson for The British Dietetics Association, disagrees. She told 5 live鈥檚 Tony Livesey that the 鈥榮niff test鈥 is not always reliable: 鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of bacteria that grows in food that we can鈥檛 smell. It鈥檚 important that we stick to using the use-by date.鈥 This clip is originally from 5 live Drive on 27 February 2017.
