'I had to concede that she would go and live in the children’s home'

Woman's Hour

Available for over a year

When Helen's daughter was a year old she was diagnosed with microcephaly and everything changed. Helen explains to Jane how it felt to go from being a mother to a carer and what eventually drove her to make the decision that she could no longer care for her disabled daughter herself. She says, ‘we’re stressed, we’re often isolated, we’re overwhelmed and we’re not helped...so I just think about that if I’m ever tempted to think I failed, I just remind myself it was a job that just got too big for one person.’
