Parliament is a ‘catastrophic’ fire risk

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Fires in Parliament could have been "catastrophic" and the building is in urgent need or repair says a Labour MP. Meg Hillier Chair of the Public Accounts Committee told 5 live: “There has been an number of fires and they really could have been catastrophic if they hadn’t been caught in time. “The building has been patched up at great expense, tens of millions of pounds a year.” The Public Accounts Committee has said delaying repairs would add to the estimated 3 and a half billion pound to the cost. Mrs Hillier added: “We really do need to get on with it. We think as a committee that moving out and doing it the quickest way is also the most efficient way and economical way because it’s tax payers money at the end of the day.” This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on Friday 10 March 2017.
