Probate is granted by the courts and gives executors permission to distribute the assets in an estate. At the moment, pretty much everyone who pays probate pays a flat fee: in England and Wales the fee is £215 if you do it yourself, a bit less if a solicitor does it for you. But, from this May, there'll be new fees, that depend on the size of the estate. Those fees range from zero to £20,000. One listener says the government is effectively levying more inheritance tax.
