Scammed out of £100,000 by man on a dating site

Woman's Hour

Available for over a year

Lynn Hawes was scammed out of £100,000 by a conman she met on a dating website. Sadly her case is not isolated. The number of people defrauded in the UK by online dating scams reached a record high in 2016. According to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau there were 3,889 victims of so-called romance fraud last year. Although the man who conned Lynn was caught and sentenced to three years in prison, the psychological effect, as well as financial, has been hard to deal with.
