Are octopuses too intelligent to eat?

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Is it ethically right to eat octopuses? Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed she won't eat them because they're too intelligent. Callum Roberts, a professor of marine conservation at the University of York, says the cephalopods are "incredibly smart" and "there are all sorts of crazy inconsistencies in the way we treat animals." "The English won't eat horses but we will eat cows. That doesn't make any sense biologically." He added: "All of the cephalopods have very smart brains. They have become an island of intelligence in a sea of simplicity." This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on Saturday 25 March 2017
