Available for over a year
Young people taking the latest drugs for HIV can now expect to have near-normal life expectancy, according to researchers at Bristol University. 20-year-olds who began the treatment in 2010 are predicted to live 10 years longer than those who first started using it in 1996. Michael Penn takes a couple of pills a day, and has been living with HIV for 30 years. He’s now nearly 76, but he told 5 live that back then, his partner died as a result of the condition within weeks of being diagnosed. "He'd been showing signs of losing weight and lesions on his skin and all sorts, and was diagnosed with symptomatic Aids in December...he died in May." This clip is originally from 5 live Drive on 11 May 2017.
