China's trillion-dollar bid to rebuild the Silk Road

World Update

Available for over a year

The president of China, Xi Jinping, has urged multilateral institutions to join his Belt and Road initiative, which he portrays as reviving ancient trade routes from Asia to Europe and Africa. Speaking to world leaders on the second day of a summit in Beijing, Mr Xi put forward his view that globalisation is the way to improve the international economy. Some countries have expressed unease about the plan, seeing it as an attempt to expand Chinese influence. Anu Anand talked to Tom Miller, author of "China's Asian Dream: Empire Building Along the New Silk Road." (Picture: President Xi of China at the Belt and Road summit Credit: Getty Images)
