Dr David Toop explains that even in Victorian times there used to be sound proof rooms where any noise in artificial silence would become a distraction, what he describes as the revenge of silence. He believes that in fact silence is the enemy of peace. He says if we are using technology as a convenience we do not find the noise a problem but if other people are using it can be an annoyance. Aleks Krotoski presents. First broadcast on The Digital Human, 15 May 2017.
