Scientists in the US say they have made a breakthrough by modifying an existing antibiotic, vancomycin, to create a new, more resistant version. Vancomycin was first sold in the 1950s and is used to treat infections of the skin, bloodstream and bones, as well as meningitis. The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s Mike Johnson talked to Anthony Coates, professor of medical microbiology at St George's medical school in London, and asked him: how significant is this breakthrough?
