Ex-firefighter MP: Government has failed to act on building safety

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Ex-firefighter, Jim Fitzpatrick, Labour MP for Poplar and Limehouse has said the government has ignored calls to improve local authority housing regulations around fire safety. Jim Fitzpatrick is secretary of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Fire Safety and Rescue. He told 5 live Breakfast that since a similar fatal fire in 2009 at Lakanal House in Camberwell, the all-party parliamentary group has lobbied the government to improve local authority housing regulations in buildings over a certain height and flats housing vulnerable people who might not be able to get out on their own. He says although they have been pushing for this to happen since 2013, the government has done nothing. “We’ve been pressing for suppression systems in buildings over a specific height and that would be to introduce sprinkler systems which would have knocked out a fire in very short order and would have not allowed this kind of blaze.” This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast Wednesday 14 June 2017.
