A huge fire has engulfed a tower block in West London. Twelve people have died so far. In 2009 six people died in a fire at Lakanal House tower block in Harriet Harman’s constituency. The Labour MP for Camberwell and Peckham told 5 live: “We know councils want to put sprinklers in to tower blocks but they can’t afford to because the government has cut their money.” Harman added: “It’s not systems, it’s not humans failure, it’s basic, after Lakanal House nobody could be in any doubt what needed to be done, for example Southwark Council has done a rolling process of inspection after the Lakanal House fire because they were concerned, they’ve also put sprinklers in hostals and old people’s homes, but they haven’t had the money to put sprinklers in tower blocks and actually sprinklers do save lives but they cost money”.
