California is the most populous state in the USA, and for a century it has been vital to everything from aircraft manufacture to making movies, so the global influence of Californian culture may seem obvious. A new show at the Design Museum in London makes the case that what California has really given us is a sense of personal freedom. Our arts correspondent Vincent Dowd reports.
