Memories of Vimy Ridge: 'Roses of Picardy'

In Tune

Available for over a year

The Battle of Vimy Ridge during World War One - as with Gallipoli for the Australian and New Zealand ANZAC soldiers - was a defining moment for the modern Canadian nation. There in the fields of northern France stands Canada's largest overseas war memorial. As Radio 3 marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Canadian Confederation, one of the country's most famous sons, opera singer Gerald Finley, came into the In Tune studio. Here he is singing Haydn Wood's popular 1916 song 'Roses of Picardy', which became popular with Canadian, British and other Commonwealth troops.
