The fight against Islamic State fighters has not only had a terrible impact on the people of Iraq and Syria but also on the heritage of these countries – irreplaceable buildings, monuments and artefacts have been looted and destroyed. A stark example of this was the destruction of the ancient Al Nuri mosque in Mosul, where IS's leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, proclaimed its "caliphate" three years ago. Professor Peter Stone from Newcastle University, who is Unesco Chair for Cultural Property Protection, set out the extent of the archaeological destruction that has been inflicted on the region.
