Gunpowder: Viewers understand 'reality' of violence

World at One

Available for over a year

The writer of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ drama Gunpowder has rejected the criticism that it was too gory saying it had to be graphic so the audience "could understand the persecution and motivation" of the two main characters. The drama, which tells of the 1605 plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament, showed a woman being pressed to death by iron weights and a priest being disemboweled . Ronan Bennett, told Radio 4's World at One that viewers now expect a much more "immersive experience" so "they want to feel as well as see" what is happening.
