Sarah Walker

Available for over a year

The women of the Air Transport Auxiliary flew from White Waltham Airfield, including legendary pilot Joy Lofthouse, who died recently at the age of 94. ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Berkshire's Sarah Walker was joined by Carol Gould, she's the author of the "Spitfire Girls." Carol Gould, Spitfire Girls Author: "Some of these women couldn't even drive a car, but they wanted to see they had a good concept of mathematics. Just having a basic knowledge of steering and operating an aircraft [was needed] and over 2,000 women applied. "It was incredible how they could get into these aircraft and learn the basics of flying. "For the most part, when you think of 309,000 millions to fly these aircraft, and it's widely accepted now the Battle of Britain couldn't have been won without the men and women of the Air Transport Auxiliary."
