A former Brexit minister has said the UK government should seek more "reassurance" from the European Union on a trade deal before committing to pay any potential "divorce bill". The UK has offered a larger sum to the EU - which could be worth up to 50bn euros (£44bn). The EU says the payment could be enough to start talks on a transitional deal, with decisions about longer-term arrangements taken next year. Conservative MP David Jones told the World at One that any offer to pay the EU "should be on the basis that it's subject to having proper terms for a trading relationship" after Brexit.
