It's not far off half a century since Placido Domingo sang for the first time in this country, as the hero - Cavaradossi - in Puccini's Tosca. No opera singer in our time has sung so many roles to such acclaim nor given so many performances. Soon it will be 4000. And still, in his late 70s, he's singing - and conducting. He's in London now to conduct that same opera,Tosca, at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Jim Naughtie's been speaking to him about why it still matters so much to him.
