How a London cabbie inspired Simon Schama

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Taxi driver Gary's love of history made Schama realise how important his series 'A History of Britain' would be. It was the only O-Level Gary failed, but the subject meant so much to him that he kept a dog-eared history book under the seat of his cab. Plus, how should a TV historian connect with the audience? "If you’re too chummy, it’s creepy, you’re just like a bore in a pub," says Schama. But "you can't be so much of an authority that it all feels like homework." This clip is originally from 5live's Peter Allen and Caroline Barker on 18th February 2018.
