This passing this week of John Perry Barlow was the end of an amazing journey for a man who started out as a worker on his parents' ranch, but ended up as one of the central figures in shaping global thinking about the internet. A lyricist with The Grateful Dead, his hippy free-thinking philosophy saw him at the vanguard of libertarianism during the 70s and 80s, and a pioneer of cyberspace politics in the 90s. Gordon Brewer examines the contradictions at heart of this digital activist. Image licensed under Creative Commons, The European Graduate School.
