Are we all suffering from 'sea blindness'?

Today

Available for over a year

A government-commissioned report looking into ocean policies says the ocean is critical to our economic future but finds we are all guilty of "sea blindness". One of the authors of the report, Professor Edward Hill from the UK National Oceanography Centre, said: "We have mapped the surface of Mars, the moon and Venus much more accurately than the sea floor of our own ocean." He said it is important to recognise the many hidden ways in which the sea affects our lives. (Photograph: A humpback whale leaping through the ocean. Credit: Getty Images)
