Can making embryos help save the northern white rhino?

Science In Action

Available for over a year

Researchers hope to produce in vitro embryos of northern white rhinos to help conserve the subspecies. Jan Stejskal, Director of International Projects at Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic, explains the two ways to make embryos: fertilising harvested eggs with sperm, and using stem cells created from live genetic material. Both methods present challenges. Photo: White Rhino, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya Credit: Jan Stejskal
