The gender pay gap debate reached a watershed moment this week when the deadline passed on Wednesday for companies, charities and public sector bodies with more than 250 employees to reveal their individual pay gap percentages. More than 10,000 firms have published data which shows more than three-quarters of UK companies pay men more on average than women, with the median gap among those companies 9.7 per cent. But what does this average methodology actually tell us and should governments be taking greater responsibility in underpinning gender pay equality?
