Do surgeons need to “warm-up” before operations?

Health Check

Available for over a year

Do surgeons need to “warm-up” before they start an operation? New research from the UK shows that skilled surgeons speed up after the first operation of the day - especially if they repeat the same procedure on the next patient. Trainee surgeon Tom Pike – now at the Northern General hospital in Sheffield – and cognitive neuroscientist Dr Faisal Mushtaq analysed data from more than a quarter of a million operations to measure the impact of the way surgery is scheduled on a daily operating list. So does Tom have his own warm-up?
