The Long Listen: Coming out later in life

5 Live Drive

Available for over a year

What’s it like to wait until your 30s or 40s to come out as gay, and admit your sexuality, and what holds people back? Susan and Gerrie Douglas-Scott became the first lesbian couple to marry in Scotland. They shared their struggles with coming out and how they had no lesbian role models when they were younger. Andy Train came out as gay a day before his 33rd birthday. He said it was a “really deep and difficult time” after he told his wife. Relationship psychologist Rachel Morris says people tend to come out when older because they're more confident in themselves and in their own skin.
