The islands of Hawaii are usually seen as a something of a tropical paradise but recently the archipelago's Big Island has resembled something closer to hell. For the last 4 weeks the Kilauea volcano has brought about surging lava flows which have transformed jungle, farmland and rural homes into a blackened, volcanic wilderness. The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s Chris Buckler has been in Hawaii this week and his Reporter's Notebook reflects on the consequences of this spectacular natural event.
