Róisín joins Lauren at the Sage, in Gateshead, ahead of her performance at the Great Exhibition of the North. The Irish-born singer - who saw rave music emerge first-hand in Manchester, and began her music career with Moloko in Sheffield - recalls her musical upbringing. She remembers performing Don't Cry For Me Argentina to her family, who enjoyed a bit of "filthy folk" as well as jazz tunes, and those of the Great American Songbook. She remembers a transformative Sonic Youth gig, aged just 14, when she headed to the record store in Stockton to swap all her U2 records. And she admits that she regarded her musical outfit, Moloko, as a conceptual art project and it took her a long time to realise that she was a bona fide singer. Her performance at the Sage will be the first in a series of "banging but personal" festival performances. However, audiences shouldn't expect quite as many costume changes, because all that packing, cleaning and dressing side-of-stage just "got a bit ridiculous". Róisín's song selections include Avalanches, Kanye West, MJ Cole and Kamasi Washington.
