Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK and Alzheimer’s Disease is the leading cause of dementia. The illness poses a huge challenge, for people who have the disease, for their loved ones in taking care of them and for the National Health Service. While there are treatments that can slow its progress temporarily, there is at least for now, there is no cure or preventive medicine that can deal with Alzheimer’s. Prof Tara Spires-Jones runs a research group studying brain changes in ageing and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s. at Edinburgh University. She discusses where medical understanding of the condition stands and what the prospects are for developing an effective treatment for it.
