The penny farthing was the name given to a bike with a large front wheel and a tiny rear wheel. They were popular from the 1870s, particularly amongst daredevils who risked life and limb for the ultimate adrenaline rush. With a huge front wheels measuring more than 5 feet wide and no brakes, it wasn't a sport for the fainthearted. But it's making a comeback amongst modern thrill seekers, as Elizabeth Hotson has been finding out.
