The dangers of hookah pipe smoking

Health Check

Available for over a year

The dangers of shisha pipe or hookah smoking are clear in new American research. Although the pipes come from the Middle East, they are increasing in popularity in places such as the US. Many smokers believe it’s less harmful than cigarettes – because the tobacco is “filtered” by water. But Mary Rezk-Hanna, who is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of California Los Angeles, says they found in 18-34 year old hookah smokers that even a single session can cause stiffening of the walls of the arteries. She describes how a hookah pipe works. (Image: Woman smoking hookah in a bar, Credit: Getty Images.)
