New 'Trojan horse' antibiotic seems promising

World Update

Available for over a year

Scientists say they have created a new antibiotic, cefiderocol, that seems promising in fighting drug-resistant bacteria. It is being described as a Trojan horse because it works by tricking its way into bacteria cells and kills them from the inside. Professor Graham Cooke, who chairs the Word Health Organization's (WHO) antibiotics working group, says the results of trials of the new antibiotic on people with a kidney or urinary tract infections are "encouraging".
