Long Interview: James Barr

Good Morning Scotland

Available for over a year

Gordon Brewer talks to historian James Barr, author of A Line in the Sand, about the post-World War One carve-up of the Middle East by Britain and France, which saw the map of the region re-drawn by the two powers in the Sykes-Picot agreement to their respective advantage. They effectively drew a line in the sand from the Mediterranean to the Persian frontier, creating Britain's 'mandates' of Palestine and Iraq, and France's in Lebanon and Syria, but in doing so unleashed turmoil and violence that is still felt to this day.
