In 1999 an inquiry into the death of black teenager Stephen Lawrence called for an overhaul of police procedures and attitudes towards race. Professor Ellis Cashmore from Staffordshire University was granted unprecedented access to ethnic minority police officers in three different forces in England to find out what life was like for black officers at the time.
