Albert Roussel brings together French and Germanic traditions in his energetic Third Symphony, which combines long, jazzy chords with sharp motifs to create a Symphony dense with colour, contrast and chaos. His compositions were often inspired by far flung places experienced, before he dedicated himself to writing, on voyages with the Navy. Fellow composer LutosÅ‚awski found Roussel’s work truly enchanting and described him as ‘sort of a French Brahms of the 20th century’.
