In 1787 Mozart was invited to Prague, where his opera The Marriage of Figaro was enjoying success. He took with him his Symphony No. 38 and conducted its premiere there, perhaps as a gift to his appreciative Bohemian audiences, and for this reason it is known as his ‘Prague.’ It has three movements, each of which is in carefully worked-out sonata form. Mozart changed the direction of music with this 'experimental' symphony. Using wind and brass instruments for the melodies (rather than as just 'punctuation') was a revolution.
