Why are women abused during childbirth in some countries?

Health Check

Available for over a year

New research published in the Lancet reveals the abuse many women get while giving birth in Guinea, Nigeria, Ghana and Myanmar. The study shows how, despite travelling for hours in labour to hospital, 5% give birth alone and almost half are abused, often during the last 15 minutes of the birth. Claudia Hammond spoke to Dr Meghan Bohren from Melbourne's School of Population and Global Health to find out more. (Image: Mothers nurse their babies in a maternity ward in Freetown.
