John Harvey Kellogg and the ‘vegetarian wolf’

The Forum

Available for over a year

John Harvey Kellogg, of cornflakes fame, was more interested in holistic healthy living than breakfast cereals. He set up the Battle Creek Sanitarium medical centre in the US state of Michigan in 1876, based on a plain meat-free diet, exercise and fresh air. Prof Howard Markel tells Rajan Datar how Kellogg used a pet wolf to help demonstrate his beliefs to his patients during weekly lectures. Image: Gray wolf. Tobias Knoepfli/GettyImages
