Being gay in the armed forces: Then versus now

Live Wires

Available for over a year

The government has apologised for the historic ban on being gay in the armed forces, which was overturned in 2000, with minister for Defence and Veterans Johnny Mercer saying: "It was unacceptable then, and it is unacceptable now". Twenty years on - have things changed culturally? 5 Live's Nihal Arthanayake speaks to gay and lesbian people serving in the armed forces - including to Lieutenant Commander Craig Jones MBE, who was the first serviceman to come out as gay after the ban was lifted.
