It was seemingly a newspaper in the state of Iowa in the USA which made the first reference to "blue collar workers" -- people doing manual jobs who wore durable dark blue uniforms because they didn't show dirt or grease so easily. As distinct from white-collar workers, who wear smarter dress shirts and spend their time sitting in front of an office desk. But for some reason, we do value blue-collar jobs differently from white collar work. So you might ask what impact has this traditional view been having on the jobs market? Our workplace commentator Patricia Vincent explains.
