Dame Vera: 'She was an icon, a national treasure'

World at One

Available for over a year

Dame Vera Lynn, the singer known during the Second World War as the Forces Sweetheart, has died at the age of 103. Dame Vera sold more than a million records by the time she was 22, but six weeks ago with the 75th anniversary of VE Day in lockdown she became the oldest artist to get a top 40 album in the UK. She was an inspiration to many, including the opera singer Lesley Garrett, who tells Sarah Montague about her remarkable legacy.
