Unlike Beethoven, Schubert or Bruckner before him, Sibelius was happy to end his symphonic output at 7 rather than 9. This symphony is a single movement work with everything, fusing elements of a scherzo, a tender slow movement and even a Rondo – where a principal theme is alternated with contrasting ones. The final chord is like an abrupt scream for some listeners, but, ‘the grandest celebration of C major there ever was,’ for others.
