Higdon is not well known outside the US but her music deserves a wider audience. Starting off as a flute player (she still favours the instrument in her compositions!) she's a recognised major composer of her generation. Her music is lush at times, at others spiky - as in the beginning of this concerto written in 2008 for her student, violin virtuoso Hilary Hahn. This work won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Composer: Jennifer Higdon Performer: Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Performer: Hilary Hahn (Violin) Conductor: Vasily Petrenko Recording date: 28 May 2009 Date of broadcast: 01 June 2009 Image credit: Andrew Bogard.
