Perhaps the greatest living Finnish composer, Saariaho has become an important voice in orchestra music, particularly in the past two decades with her mantra of "Everything is permissible as long as it's done in good taste". This concerto - written in 1994, and based on the Holy Grail legend - showcases just what the violin is capable of. This is serious stuff.
