Like his 1st Horn Concerto, Strauss’ Violin Sonata is a youthful work. It shares its optimistic and heroic qualities, and is similarly in Eb major, a key used in Beethoven’s 'Eroica Symphony' and 'Emperor Concerto'. The work is also very romantic-sounding, but since it was composed in 1887, the year Strauss married the operatic soprano Pauline de Ahna, it’s perhaps hardly surprising.
