149 years before the recent Beirut explosion a similar catastrophe took place in Stowmarket Suffolk. On August 11th 1871 at 2:10pm an event described as one of the biggest man-made explosions known at the time took place. It was caused by an accident at a Guncotton factory. The Explosion was heard at different points across the three county's of Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex .
